More About Nelson
Nelson in the United Kingdom is a hub for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship, and investment. It includes both the historic market town of Nelson in Lancashire and the expanding Nelson Technology Park. With a population of 27,922, it is the third-largest town in Lancashire and the town's economic foundations have been built on manufacturing and construction.
Nelson's History and Economy
The name 'Nelson' is first recorded in 1208, when the area was referred to as 'Nellessuna'. Its growth in the 19th century was due to the arrival of the railway, in 1840, which triggered a massive influx of people. Nelson was the largest metropolitan borough in Lancashire until the 1974 local government reorganisation and has a rich heritage of industry and manufacturing, stemming back to the 19th century when it was a hive of industrial activity. Cotton textile manufacturing was the main driver of this growth — cotton spinning, weaving, and dying. A centre for weaving was located in the area and employed many people.
In addition to cotton manufacturing, the town had a significant mining and quarrying industry. Limestone quarrying was a major industry in the area, supporting much of the local building trade. The local coal mines were underground, with a further coal field to the north-east of the town centre. Quarrying and coal mining were the primary sources of employment for many people in the town.
The 20th century saw a move away from traditional industries towards design, engineering, and service based businesses, with the growth of regional airlines and IT, and since the 1980s, Nelson has become known as a regional centre for high-technology and engineering. This shift was given additional impetus with the installation of a 12.5 acre technology park in the town centre, completed in 2003.
One of the most significant long-term investments by the local Council was the large-scale redevelopment of the town centre in 2006. As part of this redevelopment, a new library and learning centre were constructed, and a large retail centre was opened which included shops, restaurants, and bars. This was an important move for Nelson as it provided a new focus and brought in much-needed investment.
Business, Technology and Design
Today, the industrial and business culture in Nelson is a mix of traditional and high-tech, with the reinvigorated local economy playing host to a number of modern companies.
The Nelson Technology Park, established in 2003, has been key to the growth in business and technology in the town and is home to a number of local IT and engineering businesses, and international companies, many of which are involved in specialist areas such as software development, artificial intelligence, and robotics.
Other major investors in Nelson include O2, Emerson, and BAE Systems. Emerson and O2 are involved in the production of smartphone components and both have operations in the town, contributing to the evolving technology industry. Elsewhere, BAE Systems is a major employment provider and their presence in the area has increased against the backdrop of defence spending and their new factory, opened in 2020, signifies a renewed focus on engineering in the town.
Creative entrepreneurship has also been growing in the area in recent years and this includes a number of small businesses based in the town. Highlighting the creative endeavours in Nelson is the success story of two local entrepreneurs, Joanna Sloan and Emma Robinson. After meeting at the University of Manchester in 2015, they formed the WIFEY International brand and their clothing label has gone on to become one of the most successful independent clothing lines in the region.
Commerce and Investment
The Nelson Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is a business-led partnership between local authorities, businesses, public sector organisations and educational institutions. It is designed to foster enterprise and innovation within the region and to attract inward investment. In recent years, the Nelson LEP has been central to promoting economic growth in the local area, particularly through supporting SMEs (small and medium businesses), and encouraging inward investment into the town.
The Nelson LEP is particularly active in offering grants and loans to local businesses, and offers a range of initiatives such as Business Link, Business Support Portal and the Regional World Business Programme to provide advice and guidance for companies looking to expand or start operations in the area.
In addition to the support from the LEP, Nelson also benefits from close connections to some of the most prominent banks and finance providers in the North West. Major banks such as HSBC and Lloyds, and finance providers such as Funding for Business, are located in or close to Nelson, and these organisations offer vital access to capital, especially for SMEs.
Conclusion
Nelson in the United Kingdom is a thriving business, technology and design centre, with a rich manufacturing history and close connections to banks and finance providers. The reinvigorated local economy is host to a number of modern companies, and world-leading brands are increasingly drawn to the town as they seek to tap into the pool of innovative startups and entrepreneurs. This, coupled with the large-scale investments in technology parks, libraries, learning centres and retail centres, demonstrate the town's vibrancy and potential for further growth in the future.
