More About Bacup

Introduction

Located in northern England, in the heart of Rossendale Valley, Bacup is a small but vibrant market town with a fascinating history and a bustling economy closely connected to business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment. Despite its position in the suburbs of Greater Manchester, Bacup has remained a close-knit community where strong industrial roots remain and local people come together in enterprise and creativity. With a population of just 8,248 according to the latest census in 2021, Bacup is relatively small, as is the borough of Rossendale which encompasses it. Nevertheless, in recent years the town has developed a relationship with local and international business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment and has even become a leader in specialised business development. Within its relationships with business, Technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment, Bacup has emerged as an important centre of economic activity.

History

The history of Bacup can be traced back to Norman times, when it was a small village founded by the Baron of Tottington. A charter for a market was granted in 1251, and in 1782 the turfing of Market Square got underway, giving Bacup its distinctive character today. During the industrial revolution, Bacup became an important centre of the cotton industry, based on the fast-running 'Bacup Brook' which connected the town to nearby rivers and mills. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway opened its stations in 1850, connecting Bacup to Manchester, Burnley, Preston and Colne. The arrival of the railway enabled improved industry and commerce and although the mills gradually closed in the middle of the twentieth century leading to the near-demise of the cotton industry, Bacup has since been firmly re-established through the emergence of business and other services.
