More About Leyland
Leyland is a historic town located in the borough of South Ribble, Lancashire, in the North West of England. It is located just north of Preston, and is part of the wider Central Lancashire region. The town is home to a variety of businesses, as well as being a popular place to visit and live.
History
Leyland has been inhabited since Saxon times, and the name of the town derives from an Old English term meaning 'meadow or clearing in the woodland'. Over the centuries, Leyland has played a key role in the industrial transformation of the North West of England. In the 19th century, the town was a major railway hub, with the London and Northwestern Railway line opening in 1839 and the line to Preston opening in 1841.
The early 20th century saw significant industrial growth in Leyland, with the Leyland Motors Ltd, a car manufacturing company, producing its first vehicle in 1907. By the 1950s, the Leyland Motors facility in Leyland had become one of the largest car factories in Europe, and at its peak employed around 18,000 people. After the closure of the factory in the 1980s, Leyland saw a period of decline and economic downturn, which was reversed in the mid-to-late 1990s following the development of the Worden Park industrial estate and the M65 motorway.
Business and Technology
Leyland is a place of enterprise and innovation, with a diverse range of businesses based within the town's boundaries or in close proximity. Small businesses form the foundation of the town's economic activity, but it is also home to some of the UK's most well-known, award-winning and internationally renowned companies.
The Worden Park industrial estate is home to businesses involved in the production of automotive components and specialist engineering products, food packing, plastics and construction materials. Companies based on the estate include Yellotec, a specialist manufacturing company that produces high-quality automotive components, and Ramsons Foam, a leading manufacturer of foam packaging solutions.
Leyland is a regional centre for technology and design, with several leading companies in these sectors located in the town. Notably, Autosafe Global, an award-winning manufacturer of safety and security products, has its head office in the town. Elsewhere, Salesman Automotive Design is one of the UK's leading automotive design and engineering businesses, and Arcane Technologies is an innovative product design and development company.
Commerce and Financial Services
Leyland is an important commercial and retail centre in the North West, providing a range of services and retail opportunities for businesses and consumers alike. The town has a busy shopping centre, as well as a number of independent retailers on High Street and Market Square.
Leyland is also home to a variety of financial services providers, including banks, insurance companies, accountants and solicitors. This is particularly evident on Towngate, which contains a number of prominent banking and legal firms. The town also provides an important base for financial advisors and wealth managers, who can be seen providing advice on a range of investment and retirement products for clients.
Leyland has strong links with the wider financial sector, and is home to the International Centre for Pension Investment and Risk Management (ICPIRM). ICPIRM is part of the UK's National Institute of Economic and Social Research, and provides research and advice to businesses and employers on pension policy and practice.
Entrepreneurship and Investment
Leyland is an attractive place for entrepreneurs and investors looking to start or build businesses. The town provides a supportive entrepreneurial environment, with business support agencies such as the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills providing services such as advice and mentoring.
The Leyland Enterprise Centre is a business incubator designed to provide start-ups with an affordable platform to launch and grow their businesses. The centre offers a range of support services, including business advice, training, access to Wi-Fi, meeting rooms and office spaces.
Equally, investment in the town is relatively low risk, and the local economy is predicted to grow significantly in the future. This is thanks to the development of several ambitious projects, such as the £25 million North West High Speed Rail Hub (NHSR), which will provide fast links to the North West's key towns and cities.
Demographics
The population of Leyland is 28,945, according to the 2011 census. The approximate age structure is as follows:
 0-14 years — 17.4%
 15-24 years — 11.2%
 25-44 years — 29.5%
 45-64 years — 25.7%
 65 years and over — 16.2%
The majority of the population come from a White British background, with 68.3% of the population identifying as such. Other ethnicities make up a smaller proportion of the population, although these numbers have increased over the past decade.
Conclusion
Leyland is an historic town in the North West of England, with a long and rich industrial history. Today, Leyland is a thriving business centre, home to a vibrant economy and a wide range of businesses and organisations. The town's entrepreneurial environment, close proximity to Greater Manchester and strong links with the wider financial sector make it an attractive option for entrepreneurs, investors and businesses looking to start or expand.
