More About Paddock Wood
Introduction
Paddock Wood is a rural market town located in the borough of Tunbridge Wells, situated in the county of Kent in the United Kingdom. With a population of 8,800, it is the largest settlement of just under 20,000 inhabitants in the borough. Whilst its history stretches back to the Iron Age, its growth and reputation in the 21st century are increasingly linked to business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment.
History
It is believed that Paddock Wood was first settled during the Iron Age, and historians have excavated evidence of an Iron Age camp on the nearby Numington Heath. With the arrival of the Romans to the area, the town is thought to have gained its modern name from being a wooded plain or paddock. During the Middle Ages, the parish of Whetsted was under the management of the knights of the nearby Chiddingstone Castle, and parts of the wood were used for their hunting seasons.
The population increased steadily during the 19th century due to its situation on the major hops-growing area of Kent, and by the late 1800s the town's population had grown to 1,550. Paddock Wood also saw an influx of Croatian immigrants who arrived to work in the failed hops farms and many of their descendants still live in the area today.
In the 20th century, the town received a substantial development when businesses began to relocate there, attracted by its reliable transport links, namely the railway station, opened in 1886. The economy eventually expanded further in the post war years when the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway double tracked the lines, which enabled packet traffic and the arrival of industries that focused on the local agricultural activities, such as maltsters in the 1950s.
Today
In 2021 Paddock Wood is a thriving commercial and residential hub, with a range of businesses and services, including shops, restaurants, accommodation providers, and a range of facilities for leisure and recreation. Recent developments in the area have focused on the successful and popular Paddock Wood Town Centre, which was redeveloped in 2004 and has become a hub for local businesses, as well as attracting multiple national retail chains.
The town is also noted for its number of light industry and industrial businesses which include engineering companies, printing firms, packaging companies and computer services. A number of notable international and national organisations have an established presence in the town, such as Imperial Tobacco, Kingspan, and CKGroup, demonstrating one of the strong ties Paddock Wood has with business, design, and investment.
Connections to Business, Technology, Design, Commerce and Entrepreneurship
The presence of these larger businesses in the town, has proven to be of great benefit to Paddock Wood and its neighbouring areas. Imperial Tobacco, based at Station Yard in Paddock Wood, was responsible for the creation of the Imperial Innovation Centre (IIC), which provides virtual facilities, resources and support to cultivate local business development and entrepreneurship through technology, design, and commerce.
The immediate impacts of these activities have been the nurturing and growth of local start-up enterprises, with small business owners who have either rented or bought the on-site office suites, workshops and other small business spaces which the IIC provides. This kind of development, alongside investor support for the IIC, has placed the town in an advantageous spot for small business owners, including those who have just launched their companies or otherwise look to grow them.
The town is also a significant hub for computing and communications technology, with many major and minor high-tech companies operating from its vast industrial estates, providing employment to many local people. Companies such as Roffey Coombs, TCS, Satco and Clarity Technology, manufacture cutting-edge technology components, electronic design and engineering solutions that can be found in a range of industries worldwide.
The Institute of Creative Enterprise, based at Paddock Wood's Innovation and Manufacturing Centre, offers a range of courses, training, and support packages in these industries, equipping local people with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue vibrant careers in digital, commerce and entrepreneurial success.
Moreover, the area is also a hub for professionals in fields such as design, marketing, retail, healthcare, technology and engineering. Paddock Wood's connections to these industries have enabled it to have a foothold in the technological and creative industries, thus providing employment for many local people and businesses.
Cultural Attractions
Paddock Wood is also home to a number of cultural attractions, such as its historic market, which has changed little in recent years. Every Wednesday, the market offers a range of fresh and locally-sourced produce as well as other crafts and items from local businesses.
The town also has a number of green spaces and public parks, including the popular Paddock Wood recreation ground and the Sarre meadows, ideal for those looking for space to relax and exercise.
Furthermore, the town's active social calendar provides a range of events during the year, including festivals, fetes, concerts, theatre shows and other live events. The annual Hop Fest, held in August, celebrates the area's hop-growing past, whilst the Paddock Wood Festival of Music, established in 1982, has become a well-known event in the local area.
