More About Welshpool
Welshpool: Business, Technology, Design, Commerce, Entrepreneurship, and Investment
Nestled in the southeast corner of Wales and located close to its borders with both England and Ireland, Welshpool offers a unique combination of traditional charm, modern facilities and scenic beauty - making it an ideal destination for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship, and investment.
The largest market town in the Welsh county of Powys, Welshpool or Y Trallwng in Welsh, has an impressive history, having been established by the early Celtic Britons and became a major centre of wool production during the Middle Ages. Nowadays, the modern town offers a range of businesses, excellent transport links and a good quality of life that appeal to business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment.
Geography
Welshpool is situated at the confluence of the River Severn, River Banwy and the Migneint in close proximity to both the Shropshire Plain and the beautiful Cambrian Mountains, in the ancient Welsh county of Powys. The county town of nearby Newtown is 7 miles to the east, whilst Shrewsbury is 12 miles to the south, and Welshpool Town is a mere 5 miles to the north.
With an area covering just under 9.4 square miles, the town boasts a population of 5,631 according to the 2011 census, encompassing a mix of both Welsh and English cultures since the 12th century and boasting an array of independent shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes.
History
As one of the most important and oldest parts of Powys, Welshpool has been inhabited since prehistoric times. A Roman fort, Hioback, was built on the northern edge of the town during the Roman occupation of Britain, and evidence of this still stands today.
The 12th century saw the town's expansion as a settlement, when King Madog ap Maredudd of Powys granted permission for the Welsh to inhabit the area, until the Englishmen invaded the area and replaced them with their own settlers. The English language became predominant and the ancient Welsh name of Trallwng was eventually anglicised to Welshpool.
The area then went on to develop rapidly, as by the 16th century it had become the major market and trade centre for the whole of the Marshes area and became an important stop for drovers travelling their sheep, cattle and goods over the Trentabedeau Bridge to Shrewsbury and beyond.
The 18th and 19th centuries saw the building of the majestic Town Hall standing on Broad Street which still remains today, as well as the imposing Powysville Railway Station, which opened in 1857, providing direct rail services to Birmingham, London and Manchester.
In the early 20th century, Welshpool again saw a significant change in its history, as the town became an important centre for the arming of British and U.S. troops during World War I and II, resulting in the construction of an enlargement of the Royal Ordnance factory in the south of the town. The MoD base still continues to operate in the area today.
Most recently, The Severn Valley Railway which had closed in 1960s due to the Beeching axe ,was reopened in 1984 as a major tourist attraction, running steam and heritage diesel services along its line between Kidderminster and Bishop's Castle.
Welshpool Today
Today, Welshpool continues to offer a wide range of modern-day amenities and attractions, attracting both visitors and business to the area. Transport links include the mainline A5 and A458 roads, as well as a direct rail service with Birmingham and London.
The town provides a vital hub for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment, hosting a wide mix of both national and international companies along with a thriving retail and leisure sector.
High quality business facilities are available, such as the Welshpool Technology Park which use former RAF buildings to provide over 17,000 sq ft of commercial office space, and Wyken Business Centre which offers meeting and conference space and caters to start up businesses and SMEs.
The town is also home to the agricultural machinery manufacturer Kubota UK and a host of other companies operating in the engineering sector.
Demographics
According to the 2011 Census, the Welshpool population stands at 5,631, with 28.7% of the population identifying themselves as Welsh. English makes up 66.8% while Irish & Other accounted for 3% and 20.2% of the population reported that they had no religion.
48.1% of the population were found to be employed full time, a figure that has remained largely consistent since 2006. This has seen a decrease of full-time jobs in the 10-14 age range and an increase in job opportunities for those aged over 50 year olds.
The percentage of people aged 16- 74 that are educated to degree level is 20.3%, with the figure rising to 24.3% for those aged 25-34. The town's relative economic disadvantage compared to other areas of Powys and the surrounding region has seen the recruitment of the Welsh Development Agency and the Welsh Government to boost economic growth and development.
Conclusion
Welshpool is an ancient market town that has become a modern day hub for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment. With its unique combination of traditional charm, modern facilities and scenic beauty, it is an ideal destination for all kinds of business activities.
The town offers excellent transport links, quality business facilities, a number of industrial and engineering companies and skilled labour opportunities, whilst the surrounding region's geographical location, wealth of local amenities, and a good quality of life, draw entrepreneurs and investors to the area.
Overall, the town of Welshpool offers a unique combination of old-fashioned charm and modern sophistication, making it the perfect choice for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment.
