More About Warminster

A Brief History of Warminster

Located in the county of Wiltshire in the southern part of England, the small market town of Warminster has a long and unique history. From the Roman conquest of Britain and its subsequent settlement, to the prominent merchants of the medieval period and numerous local innovations, Warminster has played a vital role in the development of business, technology, design and commerce.

The settlement on the edge of the Avon Valley began as the Romans' 'Varinus' camp, built around AD49 in the village of Dilton. At the time of their conquest, the Romans brought with them a range of new communities, and with them a sense of integration, expansion and commercialism.

The area grew over the centuries in size and importance. By the 12th century, Warminster had become a prosperous manorial borough and viewed itself in financial terms as a "nerve centre of commerce and industrial interest", able to manipulate regional markets and investments. This status was cemented by the granting of a charter to the town in 1206 by King John.

With this charter, the town of Warminster was officially acknowledged as a market area and many of the locals began to engage in the commercial trade of their goods, setting up shop and establishing a network of wealthy, interdependent traders and merchants. One of the largest businesses established in Warminster during this period was the woolen cloth factory, operating from the 1660s until the early 20th century.

The educational opportunity presented by the town helped to bring new levels of ambition and growth to Warminster. With its backdrop of the Cuckoo Valley and its proximity to the prestigious Lord Weymouth College, the town has since become home to numerous well-known businessmen and entrepreneurs. From engineer Sir Frank Whittle, who developed the jet engine, to Sir Oliver Lodge, the scientist who pioneered radiosimmetry, Warminster's history of industrial and scientific achievement has produced some of the pivotal advances that have shaped the modern world.

Well-known brands often have their landmark headquarters located in the town of Warminster. These businesses include; the long-standing British newspaper publisher Warminster Gazette, the computer chip design company Ingram Micro and the emergency services provider South West Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

Socio-economic data

Warminster is located in South West Wiltshire and is a non-metropolitan district in England. The town is located around 23 miles east of the City of Bath, the county town of Wiltshire.

According to the most recent census data from the Office for National Statistics, Warminster had a population of 16,840 in 2016. The age structure of Warminster is interesting as it is split fairly evenly; around a third of the population is aged between 0-19 years, a third between 20-59 years and the final third of the population is 60 years. The town also has an estimated 18.3% of people born outside of the United Kingdom, adding an interesting cultural mix compared to the relatively small population.

The average age for the town is quite low at 41.4 years old, and the average annual salary for people living in Warminster is £27,408, significantly above the national average. Likewise, unemployment is relatively low, with only 2.3% of the population unemployed or inactive, while 92.3% of people aged 16-74 years old are in paid employment.

As a whole, Warminster has a strong entrepreneurial spirit with a number of established businesses and vibrant start-up scenes. This has been encouragingly backed with local organisations such as the Wiltshire Business Support Service, which helps to foster a cooperative and collaborative environment.

Business and Investment

Despite its relatively small size, Warminster is home to a cluster of businesses and a bustling economy. Much of the town's commercial success is down to its inventive technology companies and its hardy entrepreneurs, who have through the ages applied their ideas to new commercial ideas, products and services.

One of the biggest and most successful technology companies in Warminster is automation company Autoton, which produces artificial muscle technology for domestic and industrial applications. Autoton's products are used in the automotive, medical, aerospace and construction industries, making it a massive contributor to Warminster's economy. The company has recently received local government funding to further build and expand its research and development centre.

Another crucial player in the local economy is the Aldi supermarket chain, which has been in the area since the 1980s and has seen an increasing amount of success over the years. Aldi is now one of Warminster's biggest employers and is one of the favoured employers among the town's young people.

In addition to these larger businesses, Warminster is full of smaller, exciting enterprises. The thriving "Start-up Kingsdown" area consists of a number of new high-tech companies, such as the sound engineering solution specialists KTM Technologies and the smart-card technology provider Nolisys. It has helped increase job opportunities and investment in the area, creating numerous local business opportunities in the process.

Design and Commerce

In its long history of technological innovation, Warminster has also developed its own distinct identity as a centre for design and commerce. This has been aided by efforts to boost the local cultural scene, with events like the monthly 'Made in Warminster' market, which promotes creativity and entrepreneurship by showcasing and selling locally-made goods.

Furthermore, the studios of Warminster Design have made a name for themselves in the local area and throughout the world, developing stunning products across multiple markets, utilising print and digital design techniques. The catalogue of amazing designs is testament to the creative spirit of Warminster's people.

An important service in this emerging economy is the presence of local investments companies, who provide finance to help businesses and innovators expand their operations. Core Investments is one such organisation, connecting local company owners and entrepreneurs to investment opportunities. This has added to Warminster's 'ecosystem', encouraging the growth of new businesses and helping to propel the commercial imagination of Warminster's denizens.

Conclusion

Warminster has a long and distinguished history of making and promoting successes in business, technology and design. With its global businesses and bright start-ups, well-connected entrepreneurs, and an abundance of agencies and investors, the town has become a valuable commercial and cultural hub. Warminster provides a unique opportunity for those looking to pursue their dreams, and is testament to the power of enterprise and innovation.
