More About Stalybridge

Introduction

Stalybridge is a town in Greater Manchester, England, within the metropolitan borough of Tameside, which is a part of the ceremonial county of Greater Manchester and the historic county of Cheshire. It lies in the Tame Valley on the River Tame's south bank, 4.5 miles (7 km) southeast of Manchester City Centre, 16.7 kilometres (10.4 miles) east of Stockport and 11.3 kilometres (7 miles) north of Glossop. Stalybridge is a thriving town, with a population of 20,698 in 2018, that has seen plenty of growth over the years; as a result, Stalybridge has managed to attract many businesses to the area, as well as entrepreneurs and investors.

History of Stalybridge

The town dates back to the Norman period, with the first documented settlement in 1212. The town's name is derived from its position in relation to the River Tame, which runs through the town, and a 'steely', or stone, bridge. This bridge was built in 1707 to replace a ford that was close to the original settlement. In the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, Stalybridge was transformed. It was home to chamois leather manufacturers, cotton mills, stone quarries, and brickworks. The settlements in Stalybridge were centred around what is now the market square and Stalybridge station by the 19th century.

In the 20th century the town made history when the Tame Valley Free Trappers (TVFT) fought their first fight against "Greg's Men" at Hattersley Brook in 1912. In 1931 the formation of Stalybridge Urban District Council marked Stalybridge's development into an independent town. The population rose steadily until the 1990s, when it declined slightly.

By the 21st century, the town's economy greatly improved and the population began to grow again.
