More About Shipston-on-Stour
Introduction
Shipston-on-Stour is a small market town located in the borough of Stratford-on-Avon in Warwickshire, England. Located just outside Stratford-upon-Avon, the town has a population of around 4,000 people, and is known for its beautiful surrounding countryside and traditional aesthetics. The area has been recently undergoing a period of transition and redevelopment, as it looks to capitalise on the opportunities presented by its close proximity to the larger towns and cities of the Cotswolds and Warwickshire regions. This transition has seen a greater emphasis being placed on businesses, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship, and investment as the town looks to move into the future.
History
The smallest town in Warwickshire, Shipston-on-Stour is located on a busy road junction and would have been one of the first places of habitation in the area. Originally this was in the form a Roman army camp, but the town was first officially recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The town was most likely established as an Anglo Saxon settlement and probably remained occupied during the Norman Conquest of 1066. The town's growth remained fairly slow until the 19th century, during which time it developed as a small market town. The main industries in the area included working with wool and leather, and the town developed a distinct craftsman character as a result.
The Industrial Revolution had a small effect on the town, but it was not until the later part of the century that it started to see significant growth. This was in the form of an influx of people who were attracted by the area's rural beauty and the opportunity to find work in the surrounding town and villages. This influx caused the population to reach its highest ever level in 1901 at 4,006 people.
Following the arrival of the Great Western Railway in 1901, the town began to prosper and underwent periods of significant industrial growth. During the 1920s and 1930s business boomed and the area benefited from the effects of the War economy. However, the population declined following World War 2 and has remained fairly constant since then.
Business, Technology and Design
Businesses in the town have seen significant changes in the last few years, as the town looks to capitalise on its close proximity to Stratford-upon-Avon. Much of this has been driven by advancement in technology, broadband access and mobile phone coverage, which have all improved dramatically in the last 10 years. This has allowed businesses to benefit from improved connectivity and access to markets, whilst also enabling them to take advantage of mobile and cloud-based services.
With the improved availability of technology and access to the internet, the town has seen an increase in start-ups and entrepreneurs looking to make use of the town's advantageous location and access to larger markets. Many of these businesses are focused on digital solutions, web design and online services, whilst also trying to tap into the growing trend for ecommerce.
The town has also seen an increase in technology-driven businesses in the past few years, with the emergence of a number of technology start-ups. Founded in 2013, one of the most successful companies to come out of the town is Additive Design, which specializes in 3D printing and laser scanning.
Commerce
Shipston-on-Stour is known for its traditional market, which takes place every Wednesday and Saturday in the town centre. It is the place to come for locally grown produce, homemade crafts and antiques. The town is also home to a range of independent shops, pubs and cafes that cater to local and visiting customers, including a variety of specialist food retailers.
There is also a thriving antiques market in the town, with over 20 antique and collectables shops in the area. This is complemented by a number of art galleries and independent retail outlets, including the renowned Blue Boar picturesque boutique that carries handmade and locally crafted products.
Additionally, the town benefits from easy access to markets and shopping opportunities in nearby towns and cities such as Stratford-upon-Avon, Banbury and Oxford.

The centre provides a range of facilities, advice and support to local small businesses and start-ups, allowing them to access opportunities and resources to help develop and grow their new business.
These services are complemented by a number of investment and venture capital funds, which have been set up to support local entrepreneurs and start-ups. This includes the Shipston-on-Stour Fund, which was launched in 2017 to provide funding for local enterprise initiatives. The fund was initially supported by a range of private and corporate sources, but is now almost entirely self-supporting and has invested over £2 million into local businesses.
