More About Redditch
Introduction
Redditch is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Redditch, in the county of Worcestershire, England, located in the West Midlands. It is situated roughly midway between Birmingham and Worcester and is 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Coventry and 22 miles (35 km) northeast of Hereford. Redditch is a historic market town which first rose to prominence in the 13th century and continues to be an important hub for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment.
History
The recorded history of Redditch dates back to 1086, when the area was included in the entry list of the Doomsday Book. However, the area was most likely settled as early as the 5th century AD. Manorial records show a Manor of Radych existed in 1220, which may have been responsible for the area's subsequent rise in prominence.
At the turn of the 16th century, Redditch began to develop as a market town and was known for the manufacture of needles, pins and fishing rods. It quickly became the centre of the English needle and fishing tackle industry and thrived throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.
In the 19th century, Redditch continued to expand and the population grew rapidly. During this period, the town centre was redeveloped with new civic buildings such as the Town Hall, St Stephen's Church and the by-laws that were passed in the early 20th century enabled the development of infrastructure and housing.
Until the mid-1970s, Redditch was a thriving industrial town but then, due to changes in the British economy, the needle trade collapsed and the town entered a period of gradual decline. The regeneration project to bring Redditch back to life began in the late 90s and the effects of this work can now be seen in the town.
Demographics
According to the most recent census, Redditch has a population of 84,952 with a median age of 40.2. The town has a population density of 2,268 people per km2. The ethnically diverse population of Redditch comprises 28.4% White British and 17.6% South Asian. At 5.4%, the town's Black population is also higher than the national average.
Business, Technology, Design, Commerce, Entrepreneurship and Investment
Redditch is an important hub for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment, and there has been significant government investment in infrastructure to boost the economy of the town.
At the heart of the town lies the Redditch Industrial Estate. Established in the 1950s, Redditch Industrial Estate is home to around 400 businesses and is the main employment site in the town, contributing £63 million to the local economy each year and providing 3,500 jobs.
Redditch also has a growing technology and creative sector. In 2018, a new £20m innovation centre opened in the town, offering businesses start-up and business support, incubator space and access to technology. The Money Hive, a new co-working space and business hub, opened in 2020 and offers businesses access to experienced mentors and a host of services, events and programmes designed to drive enterprise and business growth.
Supported by the Industrial Estate and British investment in the town, Redditch has the highest number of exporters in the West Midlands. In 2019, the Government invested £11.7 million in the town's economy, to support new businesses and create skilled jobs.
In 2020, Redditch was chosen as the 'hub' for the West Midlands Growth Company's £30 million Catalyst Fund. The fund is designed to drive financial investment and venture capital into small businesses in the West Midlands. It provides a range of financial assistance to businesses, including grants, strategic investment and business advice.
Redditch's thriving business sector and leadership in technological innovation have also made it an attractive option for a number of companies looking to relocate. Notable companies that have moved or opened offices in the town include HP, Tesco and AstraZeneca.
Conclusion
Redditch is a vibrant market town with a rich cultural and industrial history. Its thriving business and technology sector has made it an attractive option for businesses looking to relocate or invest, and the town's close proximity to Birmingham and London has further enhanced its appeal.
The town offers businesses access to vast expertise, innovative technology and a range of financial services to drive enterprise and business growth. Investment in the town's infrastructure in recent years, coupled with its diverse population, have helped to transform Redditch into an attractive option for entrepreneurs, investors and businesses alike.
