More About Pathhead
Pathhead is a small village located in Midlothian Council Area, just outside Edinburgh in the East of Scotland, United Kingdom. The village has a strong history of industry, especially within the coal mining industry, and was known as the "valley of industry" during the early 18th century AD. The village contains two arches - the Provost Arch, which dates back to 1879 and commemorates the unionisation of the village's coal miners and their hard-fought victory over their employer, the Earl of Hopetoun, and the Newbigging Arch, which was erected in 1731 to honour the Reverend William Fullerton, who was one of the earliest Scots to commercially exploit coal and iron deposits in the area.
The industrial past of Pathhead is not forgotten: the local Parish Church remains an embodiment of its coalmining history. The church contains beautifully preserved stained glass windows featuring coal miners' faces, and a memorial plaque remembers those who died in the mine disaster which occurred in 1969.
As well as its rich industrial heritage, Pathhead is also home to a growing business, technology, design and entrepreneurship economy. This diverse economy is supported by the four main business sectors within the village: manufacturing, creative technology, retail and green technology.
One of the most important businesses in Pathhead is M7 Engineering; a global leader in the design and manufacture of high-end custom built machinery for companies around the world. Established in 1977, the company is a major employer in the area and also operates a number of subsidiaries, including: M7 Aerospace Solutions, M7 Robotics & Automation, M7 Drillers and M7 Connect. Amongst other things, the businesses produce advanced communication systems, aeronautic components, industrial robots and custom-built drilling systems.
The village is also home to a thriving creative technology and digital media sector, particularly in terms of multimedia production and animation. Pathhead Creative Ltd, which was established in 2010, is the largest firm in the sector and boasts an impressive portfolio of work. Their services range from web design and development to graphic design and creative marketing campaigns. Pathhead Creative is also responsible for the annual Pathhead Digital Arts Festival, which showcases the best of local talent in animation, videogames and new media art.
Retail is also a significant contributor to the local economy and Pathhead has a number of independent shops, such as the village's butcher, baker and greengrocer, as well as several larger stores, such as the Pathhead Superstore. Pathhead also has several pubs and restaurants, which are frequented by both locals and visitors alike.
Pathhead is proud to be a leader in green and renewable technology, with the majority of homes and businesses within the village running off renewable energy sources. The village boasts a number of solar-powered homes and businesses, as well as a wind turbine that provides energy to entire local neighbourhoods. This commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by the presence of several green initiatives in the village, such as the installation of electric vehicle charging stations and bike racks, as well as the use of local renewable resources for heating and hot water.
Pathhead is also a popular destination for entrepreneurs and investors looking to capitalise on the village's strong industrial heritage and growing business, technology, design and creativity economy. With lower than average house prices and a highly educated, tech-savvy population, the village is ideal for start-up businesses that are looking to expand into the growing international markets. In recent years, the village has attracted a number of high-profile entrepreneurs, such as PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, who has opened a centre for software development and accelerator in the village.
Finally, the village of Pathhead is incredibly well connected with the rest of the world. With less than an hour's drive to Edinburgh, an hour and a half to Glasgow and just two hours to Newcastle, the village is well placed to access the resources and services provided by the major cities in the United Kingdom. The village also has two railway stations - Pathhead North and Pathhead South - which provide regular services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Perth.
Pathhead caters for a broad range of demographics. The village is home to a population of around 8,500 people, with around 70% of the population being from a white British background. The median age of the population is 43.9 years, which is slightly lower than the Scottish average (45.0 years). Pathhead also has a higher proportion of over 65s than the Scottish average, with 16% of the population being over the age of 65.
The main occupations of those living in Pathhead are skilled manufacturing and skilled manual employment, with 24% and 19% of the population respectively. Other prominent sectors include admin and clerical work (14%), professional occupations (10%), sales and customer service (9%), construction (6%) and education and healthcare (6%).
In conclusion, Pathhead is a small village with a rich industrial heritage and a vibrant business and technology economy. With its commitment to sustainability, lower than average house prices, relatively young population and well connected location, investment in Pathhead offers many advantages for budding entrepreneurs and established businesses alike. Whether it be for business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship or investment, Pathhead has something for everyone.
