More About Lochgilphead
Lochgilphead, located in Argyll and Bute about two hours west of Glasgow, is a quaint seaport and town in the United Kingdom with a long history connected to business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship, and investment. With a population of about 3500 people, it has been at the center of many innovations, from shipping and trading to railroad and infrastructure. This small, yet bustling towns has seen immense growth over the years, accommodating developments and changes that have opened up new possibilities of investment, entrepreneurship and technology that are unparalleled in many other rural towns.
The modern history of Lochgilphead starts with the formation of the West Coast Railway which opened up in 1883 and allowed locals to more easily access their nearest large town, Oban. This opened the doors to more trade with the former gold rush town, cementing the railway's reputation as the backbone of industry in the area.
This same railway also allowed people to access the gorgeous Loch Etive where many families stayed and enjoyed all the loch had to offer, particularly during the summer months. The railway's routes also connected industry hubs of Campbeltown and Glasgow with the west coast cities of Oban and Fort William, providing business opportunities that would otherwise have been inaccessible.
Lochgilphead is also home to one of the largest and most technologically advanced industrial harbours in Scotland, located at the head of the loch. Maintained and developed by a local company, the harbour has three berths, two of which are mainly used for specialist bulk cargo, such as fish and recycled materials, and one being mainly used for smaller vessels. Although the harbour is mainly associated with cargo transportation, it has been enlarged in recent years to accommodate pleasure craft for sailing around the loch, thus giving local people the chance to explore the surrounding area and enjoy what the loch has to offer.
The Castle House Museum, opened in 1894, is another popular tourist attraction in the town, with a collection of artefacts, including items relating to the town's history and cultural connections, gathered over the years. The museum was recently refurbished and expanded to include a multimedia experience featuring interactive exhibits and an audio-visual section dedicated to telling the story of the town's past and its development over time.
Lochgilphead is well known as the birthplace of the Scottish Co-operative Movement. The Campbell's Co-op, founded here in 1865, is one of the oldest surviving consumer cooperatives in the world and was the model for the Co-operative Movement which transformed the villages and towns across Scotland. Despite the gradual decline of the Co-operative movement, in recent years the trend for consumer cooperatives has seen a rise again, providing opportunities for start ups to develop and make use of traditional co-operative principles.
The town is also renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and design. The Lochgilphead Technology and Design Centre (LTDC) was established in 2005 and provides support for start-ups, entrepreneurs and small businesses in the region. The centre features a range of services, such as mentoring, business advice, innovation and training, as well as providing incubation spaces for those starting up new businesses.
The town is also home to a range of independent businesses, such as The Esotheba Gallery and Cafe, Lemon Tree Restaurant and the West Coast Waterports Centre, which offers a range of activities for visitors such as sailing, kayaking, biking and windsurfing. These businesses contribute to the dynamic diversity of the town and demonstrate the prominence of the creative and entrepreneurial spirit in the area.
The demographic of the town is predominantly white, with the majority of the population aged between 40-65. About 25% of the population is aged over 65 and there is an increasing number of people aged between 19-30, with over a third of the town being students. The median house prices are significantly lower than the Scottish average, allowing more people to be able to buy into the area and help the local economy.
Overall, Lochgilphead is an area of immense potential, combining its stunning surroundings with the entrepreneurial spirit of its people. From its humble beginnings as a transit point linking local villages with larger cities, the town has developed into an area of significant creativity with flourishing business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship, and investment opportunities. Scottish Co-ops hold a special place in the town as a model for fostering collaboration and investment amongst entrepreneurs, and offer an example to start-up businesses how to thrive in the modern economy. Today, Lochgilphead is a vibrant and dynamic area offering immense opportunity for those looking to solve a problem, grow their business, or simply explore their stunning surroundings.
