More About Ilminster
Introduction to Ilminster
Ilminster is an ancient small town in Somerset, England, best known for its beautiful Georgian architecture, rural charm and hot summers. Located just eight miles from the Dorset coast, Ilminster is home to a wide variety of leisure and cultural attractions, and offers great access to both urban and rural attractions in the region. Ilminster has seen a resurgence in recent years, with an increasing range of locally-owned businesses and great investment opportunities both in the town and surrounding areas.
The History of Ilminster
A settlement situated on a hilltop, Ilminster has been a part of Somerset since at least the 12th century. It is recorded as having been settled by the Normans in 1086. Since then, the town has seen periods of both bust and boom, with the coming of the Great Western Railway in the 19th century seeing an influx of new people and businesses. However, with the decline in railway freight in the post-war period, Ilminster fell into economic decline and its population decreased from some 5,413 inhabitants in 1931 to around 5,000 inhabitants in the early 2000s.
Modern day Ilminster
Ilminster is now undergoing a period of positive change and growth. With its historic town centre, Grade I listed buildings, sun-soaked summers and large green spaces, the town is enjoying a revival as a tourist destination and a hot spot for entrepreneurs and lifestyle businesses.
The changing face of the town has seen an influx of younger people and creative professionals, with figures showing a jump in the number of people aged 25 to 39 living in the area — from 26% in 2001 to 38% in 2011. Connected to the rest of the UK by railway, Ilminster also benefits from easy access to London and other regional centres.
Business, technology, design, and commerce in Ilminster
Ilminster has a long history of enterprise; with artisanal leather and glove making being one of its traditional industries. The town's market charters, dating back to 1210, have seen periodic booms in the town's trades, with new industries such as watch making flourishing.
Today, Ilminster is home to a growing number of businesses that cater to visitors, investors or the creative community. A number of technology companies have chosen to locate in the town, taking advantage of its favourable location for access to larger cities and its relaxed living pace. One such notable example is Eleven Communications, a full service, digital marketing and communications agency that offers editorial services, branding, web design and more.
As well as technology businesses, Ilminster is increasingly home to creative professionals, with a number of independent shops, art galleries and design studios popping up. Ilminster is also home to award-winning wine specialists, restaurants and cafes, selling local produce and attracting a diverse clientele.
Ilminster & entrepreneurship
Ilminster is also becoming a hub of entrepreneurial activity. The town is home to a number of start-ups, with networking events being organised to support new businesses. Ilminster's educational institutions have also been encouraging entrepreneurship, with courses and competitions to foster the development of new ideas. These include English courses at the Ilminster College of Further Education, which focuses on the development of English language skills for business, and IT courses at the Ilminster Institute of Technology.
Ilminster & Investment
With the changing face of Ilminster, the town is increasingly becoming an attractive option for investors. This is reflected in growing prices and the number of property developments in the area, as well as the successful businesses that have chosen to make the town their home. There are numerous investment opportunities, from restored homes to office buildings and student housing. Investors are attracted by the town's diverse economic base and easy access to greater regional markets.
Conclusion
Ilminster is an attractive and dynamic town with a centuries-old history and growing modern cultural and economic vibrancy. With its picturesque Georgian architecture, friendly people and convenient location, the town is increasingly being seen as an attractive place to invest, as well as a place where businesses and entrepreneurs can find success.
