A Brief History of Hove

Hove is a town located in East Sussex, England. It is part of the larger coastal city of Brighton and Hove, and is located within the historic and strategic county of Sussex. Hove was originated in around the sixth century, which was the earliest known human settlement of the area. In 1086, the Domesday Book was compiled, and Hove was recorded as 'Hoove', with taxations being paid there. It was around this time that many manors and estates were established in and around Hove, with St Andrew's Church being founded around this time too. It was not until 1803, when the Brighton Hove gasworks was established, that Hove slowly started to become industrialized and developed in a more urban manner. In 1878, the Brighton and Hove Gazette newspaper was first produced, which highlighted the state of Hove and expansion of the area in one simple publication.

From this point onward, Hove slowly but surely developed, with later larger developments such as the Regency Square, being built by William Porden. This provided much of the Victorian architecture which is present in Hove today. As a whole, Brighton and Hove were granted city status in 2000, by Queen Elizabeth II. In the recent times, Hove has become a bustling, yet picturesque area of Seaside life and creature comforts.
