More About Grays
Grays in the United Kingdom: A Hub of Business, Technology, Design, Commerce, & Entrepreneurship
Grays, located in the county of Essex, is a town in the United Kingdom which is quickly gaining notoriety for its vibrant business scene, being an outlet for technological innovation, and a centre for creative design, commerce and entrepreneurship.
History
The ancient town of Grays first appeared as 'Grey' in records in the year 1148. It is named after the Grays family who, over 600 years ago, were the lords of the manor. Early on in its life, Grays remained a peaceful agricultural market town and until the 1950s the rural nature of the Grays area provided much of the employment.
In the late 19th century Grays was beginning to transition, though little evidence of that early transition still exists. In 1889 Grays developed its railway station and the town first became connected to a broader network which saw visitor numbers increase, significantly changing the commercial makeup of the area. Initially this included shipbuilding, particularly in coal ships and other boats, due to its marina which had opened in 1853.
During the second world war Grays saw another transition, to become a centre for aircraft production. The former saw works of the shipbuilding giant, Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. Ltd, had converted to produce Typhoon fighter planes. This labour-intensive industry employed 15,000 people.
Although brief, this period continued to shape Grays' relationships with the industry of engineering and technology which were to play an important role in the future of the town.
In the post-war period, the town remained an important manufacturing hub and is where the iconic 'G-Plan' furniture range was created. G-Plan Furniture was developed by E Gomme Ltd, an established furniture company, which marketed their ranges as affordable and stylish furniture. This series of collections are now seen as iconic symbols of British design, contributing to Grays' association with creativity in design.
Modern Grays
In recent times, Grays has become known as a place of new opportunities. It has become a popular local business centre due to its access to London via the River Thames, and its geographic location situated close to the Dartford Crossing which provides links to other counties such as Kent. Additionally it has become a destination for those seeking investment opportunities, with many buying property in Grays and using it as a base for their business ventures.
Business & Technology
Grays has developed itself as a leader for business and technology. Its convenient location and transport links has made Grays a popular destination for major businesses seeking a foothold in the South of England. Some of these include BOC, Unilever and IBM, who have located offices in the district.
The thriving technology industry has been well supported by local businesses, Global Luxury Group combines luxury technology with cutting-edge design and is based in Grays. And Rees provides industry-leading 3D printable solutions tailored to local businesses in Grays, as well as its other locations in the UK. Another company, Designsmith Development, provides custom development solutions to their local and international clients. Grays also has a secondary technology sector, providing a platform for smaller businesses to access services and expertise including website development, e-commerce solutions and graphic design services.
Design & Commerce
Grays is a town known for its creative flair. The local area has seen a number of start-ups flourish, creating unique and innovative products and services.
Creative design knowledge has been provided by Make Believe, a local startup which launched in 2019. Their focus is on providing creative solutions to their clients, ranging from bespoke hand-coordinated wallpaper for interior design projects to signature logos for corporate branding.
Within the local area, Grays is home to some of the most innovative cases of commerce. The Town Centre has seen a rapid transformation from traditional retail outlets to thriving, vibrant and creative shopping precincts. Markets are held multiple times each week, offering a selection of food, clothing and local crafts as well as a weekly farmer's market held on Fridays.
Commerce is further supported by local events such as a monthly craft market, an independent pop-up shop series, and forward thinking events such as a monthly 'Social Sunday' which brings together locals and independent businesses to celebrate their collective town.
Entrepreneurship & Investment
The opportunities that Grays provides are not limited to just business, technology and design. The Investment Centre of Grays, alongside the local government and the British Business Bank, provides a platform for investors and businesses to access tailored services and solutions, connecting them to banks and other sources of funding.
Grays is also a destination for established and start-up entrepreneurs, with their innovative business solutions. Pro Day Trade, for instance, offers online B2B services to connect SMEs with customers and suppliers. The local government of Thurrock has been actively encouraging the development of business solutions in the area, recently creating a Business Hub to provide either co-working or incubator space.
Demographics
According to a recent demographic report, Grays has a population of approximately 24,000 people, with an average age of 38. The ethnicities in the town are diverse, with 16.6% classifying as White British, 8.7% of other White origins, 7.8% of White European origins, 2.4% of Mixed origins and 10.1% of Asian/Asian British backgrounds. Additionally, 13.8% of Grays' population are from a Black/African/Caribbean/Black British background.
