More About Dolgellau
Introduction
Dolgellau, located in the Welsh county of Gwynedd, sits at the foot of Cader Idris, an 893m peak in the southern Snowdonia National Park. This small market town, set amongst the beautiful Welsh countryside, is also home to Dinas Mawddwy, or 'the meeting place', an area that has a rich and long history and is still host to a number of cultural events and festivals. Dolgellau's historic, picturesque setting and strong sense of community, make it an attractive place for those considering starting a business or seeking to enter the world of commerce, technology, design and entrepreneurship.
History
Dolgellau first emerged in the 12th century as a Norman settlement within the Welsh kingdom of Powys and is thought to be named after the local ruling dynasty, the caw dynasty of Summer. As the principality of Powys grew stronger, it was an important commercial centre and became an important stop-off point on the great Welsh drover roads. As a result, the town developed its traditional industries, mainly materials and wool and eventually, woollens and clothing.
During the 19th century, it was an especially busy trading area, as well as a home for the local gentry and clerical order. The town grew significantly, with the re-building of many of the local schools, such as Dolgellau Grammar School and the Ladies College. In addition, a railway line, running from Oswestry to Barmouth, passed through the town and this provided a link to the rest of the UK and Europe.
In the 20th century, the town remained an important business hub, particularly through its involvement in the dairy industry and its associated processing plants. This, in turn, led to the growth of other industries, such as engineering and tools, as the town's location enabled access to the natural resources of Wales and the rest of the UK. This also enabled mining and associated activities in the area, such as ball clay and petroleum refining.
Demographics
The population of Dolgellau is currently just under 3,000, with around 51% being Welsh-speaking, although this is down from the 91% recorded in 1951. The local area has a high percentage of primary-school aged residents (0 — 14 years) compared to the rest of Wales, at 22%. The population is spread out between the different ages, with a growing percentage of 16-29 year olds (17%) in 2018, compared to 2011 (15%).
Business, Technology, Design, Commerce, Entrepreneurship and Investment
Dolgellau has a vibrant and diverse economy, mainly based around traditional industries such as tourism, services and retail, as well as construction and production. There are still many traditional businesses in the area, such as pubs, blacksmiths and retailers, but the area is now becoming well known for its encouraging business environment, especially in the areas of design, technology and entrepreneurship.
In recent years, the town has seen a surge in creative, design and technology businesses springing up, including web design and IT services companies, and engineering, scientific research and innovation companies. This growth in technology and design businesses has been supported by both private and public investment, such as seed funding from the Welsh Assembly, which has enabled these businesses to get off the ground and expand their operations.
There are also a range of government initiatives in place to help businesses start-up or expand in Dolgellau, such as the Mid Merthyr Innovation Zone, an incubator for start-ups and small businesses, as well as various initiatives to promote business in the region, such as Menter a Busnes, a project that provides funding, advice and support to businesses wishing to start up or expand in the area.
In terms of entrepreneurship in Dolgellau, the area has attracted several high-profile investment firms, such as the Discovery fund, which has helped to fund several businesses in the area over the last few years. In addition, the local university, Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, has recently opened its Spark Centre, which helps to inspire and develop entrepreneurs and creative industries throughout the region.
Conclusion
Dolgellau is a beautiful market town which is steeped in history and has a vibrant and active community. It is an area of Wales which has an incredibly diverse culture and also an appealing business environment for those interested in technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment. With government incentives and the availability of investment and start-up funds, the town is well placed to become a hub of business, creativity, innovation and enterprise in the heart of the Welsh countryside.
