More About Chester le Street
Introduction
Chester le Street is a town in County Durham in the United Kingdom. It lies on the southern banks of the River Wear, about 6.5 miles south of the city of Durham and about 12 miles south of Newcastle upon Tyne. With a population of almost 26,000 people, it is the largest town in the borough of Chester-le-Street, and benefits from its rich historical culture as well as its close proximity to great cities like Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland.
Not only does Chester le Street provide an ideal setting for businesses, thanks to its close proximity to plenty of industrial areas and international airports, it also provides strong links to technology, design, commerce and entrepreneurship.
History
The area now known as Chester le Street has been home to permanent settlement since at least the Roman times. The Romans built a wooden fort on the River Wear in 80 A.D. and a nearby Roman villa was uncovered that was used as early as 150 A.D. During the Middle Ages, Chester le Street was a major market centre and one of the major towns in County Durham.
Chester le Street was granted borough status in 1267 and received a charter in 1296. However, its role as a major regional centre declined in the years that followed, and the town's economic reliance on coal mining increased. During the industrial revolution, the town was an important source of coal for the region and for the rest of Britain.
Modern Day Business
Today, the town continues to be a bustling centre for business, technology, design, commerce and entrepreneurship. Increasingly, private companies, large and small, are attracted to the area with its convenient transport links and its traditional industries such as manufacturing and logistics.
In recent years, Chester le Street has seen several major developments, such as the opening of Phoenix Business Park, the new North East Automotive Park, and the refurbishment of the historic Chester le Street Town Hall. Companies based in the area include Newell Rubbermaid, EMC Corporation and Sage.
Twentieth century design and local entrepreneurs
Chester le Street is also home to a vibrant design community and a number of local entrepreneurs. In the mid-20th century, the town was the site of a pioneering design school, the North East Regional Design Center which trained many leading designers of the time.
More recently, the town has produced several notable entrepreneurs, including brothers Ed and Paul Dixon who founded the online home appliance retailer Appliance Pro. Other prominent business people from the area include Chris Sykes who founded the online coaching and education company High Performance Leadership LLP, and Gary Stanley who created B-Safety First, a safety consultancy firm specialising in risk assessments, safety audits and safety management systems.
Since the early 2000s, Chester le Street has seen an increase in tech companies specialising in new technologies such as drones, artificial intelligence and virtual reality. This influx has created an exciting start-up scene, with several venture capital firms situated in the town.
Chamber of commerce and business support
The Chester le Street and District Chamber of Commerce is a key organisation in the area, supporting businesses in the town and promoting local businesses. The organisation publishes monthly newsletters and runs several events throughout the year such as the Annual Business Awards ceremony, to celebrate the success of local businesses.
The Chamber of Commerce also works closely with the local council, to ensure the region is kept well informed of projects and schemes which are relevant to businesses in the area. These include access to business grants, government incentives and other support for start-up and established businesses.
Demographics
According to the latest census, Chester le Street has an estimated population of 25,873 people. The population is largely white British (93.3%), although there is a diverse minority population, with 6.7% of the population identifying as belonging to a minority group.
The median age of residents is 39.7 while the average household size is 2.5 people. In terms of employment status, 60.5% of residents are employed, while 13.5% are unemployed and 26% are economically inactive due to retirement, study or ill health.
Conclusion
Chester le Street is an idyllic town located in the north-east of England with a rich history. In recent years, the area has become a hub for business, technology, design, commerce and entrepreneurship. The town provides convenient transport links, a range of local businesses, a vibrant start-up scene, and several venture capital firms. This combination of factors makes Chester le Street an ideal setting for businesses of any size. The local council and Chamber of Commerce are on hand to offer additional support and advice to businesses in the area and ensure their continued success.
