More About Brigg
Brigg: A Long History of Connections to Business, Technology, Design, Commerce, Entrepreneurship and Investment
Brigg is a small market town and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. With Britton Ferry, a Roman road and multiple ancient landmarks all in close proximity, the history of Brigg is vast, tracing back to pre-Roman times. Despite its modest size, Brigg's long, rich history and unique historical connections to a variety of commercial, technological, design and entrepreneurial activities mean it is a popular location for business, tourism and investment.
The earliest known references to Brigg come from the Roman road, Britton Ferry, which ran through the area. However, it wasn't until later that Brigg officially became a town. During the Middle Ages, Brigg was a strategic port town that saw several industries including grain mills, metalworking, fishing and trading. The town was lively and bustling, boasting the largest market and fair in North Lincolnshire. By the 18th century, Brigg had developed into a hub of industry and enterprise. At this time, many significant infrastructural improvements were made, such as a new navigable Fen-Dike and the improvement of roads, which allowed for larger ships to transport goods to the port.
The 19th century saw further industrialisation, with the rise of brick making and engineering firms. Stone production and the manufacture of lime cement were also established in the area. By the late 19th century, Brigg was in the middle of an economic transformation with the advent of railways, which allowed for easy access to new markets and the movement of goods and people. During this period, Brigg experienced the biggest growth in its history, with a flush of foreign investment and the development of several new businesses.
Brigg has produced many renowned entrepreneurs, including Robert Bakewell and Carpentier & James, who have been very successful in their various business pursuits. Robert Bakewell's inventions, such as the Bakewell Ring and the Tilting Marl Saws, revolutionised the agricultural system, while Carpentier & James were pioneers in the world of invention, developing the first ever steam-powered locomotive and the first successful electric-powered motorboat.
Even today, Brigg continues to be a thriving business hub. The town centre is home to a variety of different shops, restaurants and businesses, making it an ideal place for business, tourism and investment. There are also numerous technology, design, and commerce-related businesses in Brigg. Notable technology companies include AgriLife, a leading agricultural biotechnology company, and Creative Sound, a manufacturer of professional-grade audio equipment. Similarly, Brigg is home to several design companies, including Crest Design, a leading bricks and mortar design agency.
In addition to the established businesses in Brigg, the town also has a vibrant start-up and entrepreneurial culture. Brigg is home to multiple incubators and co-working spaces, such as the Brigg Entrepreneurial Hub, which provide entrepreneurs with the resources they need to launch and grow their businesses. The hub also serves as a networking space for local entrepreneurs, allowing them to collaborate, share ideas and access potential investors.
The creativity and ambition of Brigg's entrepreneurs has been instrumental in driving the town's economy forward. The Town Council recognises the importance of entrepreneurship and has made considerable investment in the local economy, including creating a regeneration plan to encourage new business, develop infrastructure and increase job opportunities.
Demographically, according to the most recent census in 2021, Brigg has a population of 10,575. The majority of the people in the area are of White British ethnicity, followed by White Other and Mixed. The median age of the population is 47.1 and the median household income is £25,385 per year.
The long, rich history of business and enterprise in Brigg has attracted a great deal of investment, making it a prime location for business, tourism and investment.
