More About Bridge of Weir
Bridge of Weir: Technology, Design and Investment on the Rise
Just a 30-minute drive from Glasgow, in the heart of Scotland, lies Bridge of Weir. This small village in Renfrewshire has an illustrious history, but today the place is on the rise as the centre of innovative business, technology, design and entrepreneurship initiatives.
This once-sleepy village emerged during the early 19th century through the production of high-quality leather products. Fuelled by the demand for specialized leather interiors for carriages and furniture, Bridge of Weir grew to be one of the leading leather-producing centres in the nation. Later, with the original weavers' houses now being used as factories, the village became renowned for its leather production with tannery workers from all over Scotland coming to work there. Notably, the Bridge of Weir Leather Company achieved international success with their products supplied to leaders around the world, from the House of British Monarchy to the Oval Office of the President of the United States.
Today, Bridge of Weir continues to innovate and soar. Driven largely by its superior infrastructure, modern design principles and strategic investments, the village has seen a surge in development, as businesses, tech startups, and venture capitalists seek to locate their operations in this thriving metropolitan area.
Infrastructure
The infrastructure in Bridge of Weir has been key to the village's recent success. Among the major developments has been the £14 million regeneration project that majorly improve the roads network and pedestrian access across the village. The scheme has already seen the construction of four new roundabouts, one of the first in Britain. The upgrade in roads and pedestrian access has been accompanied by improved lighting, new benches and footbridges, bringing much-needed East-West connectivity across the village.
The project, scheduled to completion in summer 2021, not only brings with it great environmental and transport improvements for all residents, but also acts as a driving force for further investment. What's more, the central socio-economic anchoring points of the village, in the form of educational institutions, have only been enhanced. The University of Strathclyde's newly established Bridge of Weir Campus is quickly becoming an academic hub for the nearby area, with its stunning educational facilities and college support offering the perfect springboard for new tech entrepreneurs in the area.
