More About Blackwood
BlackwoodA Primer on the United Kingdom's Economic Powerhouse
Straddling the Welsh-English border, the small town of Blackwood, UK, is a little-known British powerhouse. Located in the borough of Caerphilly, at the foot of the Black Mountains, Blackwood has repurposed and refreshed itself over the decades to become a globe-reaching hub of diverse and often interconnected industries. From its history of early industry and engineering to its modern-day fields of business, technology, design, commerce, entrepreneurship and investment, the Blackwood region is surrounded and strongly shaped by economics.
History and Geography
Blackwood is home to some 13,720 people, who, according to the 2011 census, are from diverse ages, backgrounds and races. The majority of the population is white, British or Welsh and reside in the Caerphilly county borough area, a diverse metropolis with a total population of 191,451 as of 2020.
Part of the ancient kingdom of Gwent, Blackwood originally developed around the Blackwood railway stationthe first station on the long-defunct Ebbw Junction to Bargoed line. This station opened in 1865, just prior to the opening of the first public coal mine at nearby Bedwellty in 1868. These early mining activities shaped the town's development, which led to the employment of thousands of miners since the 1850s.
The centuries that followed saw Blackwood transition from an industrial hub to a centre of commerce, as the railway epilogue gave way to motorways and other infrastructure that were then necessary to facilitate the town's growth.
Today, Blackwood is located on the A472, 36 km west of the Welsh capital of Cardiff and 150 km west-southwest of London. This gives Blackwood access to the M4 motorway, making the town an ideal base for commuting to Welsh and English cities and urban areas.
Industries and Business
Over the years, Blackwood has established itself as a premier economic centre in the United Kingdom. Its fundamentals are predominantly rooted in the traditional manufacturing and service industries, but in recent years the town has seen a surge of growth in the knowledge-based sectors and high-tech science and engineering businesses.
Amongst Blackwood's largest employers are truck manufacturers DAF, who operate a facility in the nearby Hirwaun Industrial Estate; fibreoptic cable network company L.C. Kendall, who are based in a major facility at Blackwood Business Park; and the British Red Cross, whose UK headquarters is located at Penallta House in nearby Ystrad Mynach.
The town is also heavily wired into the hi-tech industry. For instance, the National Digital Exploitation Centre (NDEC) is located on Blackwood High Street, where the centre is used as a hub for local tech firms, academics and experts. The NDEC's Digital Innovation Hub (DIH), which was established in 2014, provides access to a range of services, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing facilities, which have been made accessible to the local community.
Blackwood is also home to a number of budding entrepreneurs, small business owners and tech-savvy investors. DelNET (Development of Networked Enterprises), a spin-off from Blackwood-based start-up venture Fuzed, operates a local 'innovation square', a fully-occupied workspace, behind Penallta House, where numerous technology startups, such as the upcycling venture Unloosit and fintech company cWallet, are based.
Design, Commercial Activity and Investment
The town has become a centre of design and commercial activity in recent years, with a rapidly growing number of independent businesses, restaurants and cafes. This vibrant local economy involves many shops, creative industries and creative hubs such as the town's Creative Quarter; a designated area as part of a wider Welsh Government program, designed to drive new enterprises and innovation through creative businesses located in the old town.
The creation of this area has helped to proliferate Blackwood's digital businesses, with investors from around the United Kingdom, taking advantage of the town's digital offering and the immense potential available. Examples include the Perigon Group, a venture capital firm specialising in premium tech investments, which opened an office in Blackwood in 2014, and the UK arm of French IT powerhouse Bulldog Digital, which has its Welsh office located in the town's industrial estate.
Since it was founded in 2015, Welsh Government-backed Blackwood Investment Opportunity Fund (BIOF) has also operated in the town, providing both mentorship and financial support to local businesses. This initiative, along with other locally-backed funding structures, has been a massive boost to Blackwood businesses, providing access to venture capital and loan funds.
Conclusion
Blackwood is a pragmatic, enduring and increasingly dynamic economic centre for Britain, where vibrant creative industries are taking root and where science-based industries and digital start-ups are beginning to thrive. The town's modern and energetic identity is due in no small part to its connections to growing economic fields, and its rich history of traditional engineering, which has seen Blackwood remain an upper tier contender, with a diverse and thriving engineering, high-tech, digital, design and investment environment that, together, has allowed the town and its people to take advantage of Britain's contemporary economic opportunities, with great success.
